When should I @mention someone?
30-second answer
Mention someone when you're directly addressing them or asking them to weigh in. Don't mention to summon attention to your post in general — it reads as spammy and people learn to mute mentions.
Step-by-step
Good reasons to @mention
- You're replying to their question or post and want to make sure they see it
- You're asking them specifically — "Hey @alex, you've done this before, what worked?"
- You're tagging credit — "Big thanks to @jordan for the playbook"
Bad reasons
- Trying to summon a teacher because no one else replied. If you have a teacher question, post it in the right category and wait
- Mentioning 5+ people in a single post to "make sure they see it"
- Mentioning to argue or pressure someone publicly
Etiquette
- One mention per relevant person, max. Two if it's genuinely a multi-party thread
- If they don't reply, don't @ them again to bump it. They saw it
- Mentioning someone in a complaint thread crosses into harassment fast — keep things 1-on-1 in DMs if it's personal
Things to know
- Members can mute mentions per-room or globally in Notification Settings.
- Teachers and admins are not always on — give it 24h before re-pinging.
